Early Mornings, Late Nights

Well, it's been a while yet again, but I really wanted to post about how IM training is going. My original goal was to complete the Great Floridian Triathlon in October, but that plan got scuttled in favor of Ironman Arizona in April. I must say that the biggness of this goal at times overwhelms me. I think that is partly because I am trying to do many things all at once. First I am trying to train enough that race day isn't a death march or worse a DNF. Second I am trying to lose weight, which has been a much harder struggle than I ever thought it would be.

About one year ago I came home from Thanksgiving and weighed 232. That is terrible, considering I was all the way down to 189 in early 2003. So off I went, embarking on a journey toward the new lighter me...again. I got dow to 215 a few times, but I have hovered at 220 all year. I eat really poorly, and then I eat way too much of those poor food choices. I have learned some things along the way thought

1. I wish the Ironman didn't consist of a swim. I don't burn many calories swimming, but I still have to train for it, so that means lots of long pool sessions. The problem there is that I come out so hungry I am ready to eat everything in sight. I am way more hungry after the swim than any other exercise.

2. O.R.M. This is my new training/weight loss mantra, Only Running Matters. I feel like I can bike and swim and cross train all day and gain weight, but if I run consistently, I take off the weight. The problem is that I can't ever run enough to counter-act all the bad food choices.

3. I have to see the other 6 o'clock a lot more. This morning I was up and on my bike trainer by 7, but I still didn't have enough time to get in the amount of time on the bike I need. I need to get up earlier, but then I have to go to bed earlier...you see where this is going.

Today the weight is 220, and I had a 23 mile run week last week as well as 2500 on the swim and 30 or so bike miles. Paltry by some ironman standards, but I am getting there

Hopefully next time I write I'll be below 210!!!
